Love and Law - or - how to take advantage of a powerful creative process

I recently revisited a wonderful little book by Ernest Holmes called Love and Law. It’s a transcription of a bunch of talks he gave in 1918.

I love this little book almost as much as I love the Science of Mind textbook, and I love it because Holmes just comes right out and speaks the truth. He doesn’t wrap things up in nice little packages to make things easier for people to digest. So I’m asking you right now to put your big girl and big boy pants on, and listen with an open mind and even better, an open heart, and see if you can move into a space where this information sinks in. I promise it will improve your life.

So what, exactly, is the Law? Ernest Holmes speaks of it a lot. The Law is part of a trinity, a beautiful and powerful triune of creativity in our lives. The Law is the middle part, the part that takes our thoughts and manifests them. Our thoughts are the top part, physical manifestation is the bottom part, and Love, or God, or Spirit or whatever you want to call It surrounds the entire package. We are this trinity. The trinity is not something to worship, it is something to be. The trinity is thought, law, manifestation, surrounded by, upheld by, given strength and power by a loving Spirit that is everywhere present. A Spirit that manifested us so that It could experience the physical. A Spirit that does not do things, but supports us in our doing.

Now, you may think this a radical way of thinking about God. But Holmes comes right and and says it in this little book:  “We have to accept the fact that the God to whom the human race has been praying does not exist. There is no such God.”

I’ve agreed with this since I found this teaching. In fact, I sought this teaching because the God to the whom the human raced prayed was not my God. When I found this teaching,  this one truth catapulted me from a life of victimhood to a life of empowerment, and it opened the doors to a much more rewarding life than I ever knew possible. And yet, most folks resist such ideas. The resistance is powerful and strong. Even people in this teaching resist it.

But in my mind, the triune of creativity simply does not work if one continues to think that god does it all. If god does things, then what is the law for?

Holmes says, in the Science of Mind textbook, that Law is mind in action. “The Law is a blind force, and whatever goes into the subjective state of our thought tends to return again as some condition. See the Chapter on “Control of Conditions” for further elaboration…”

It cracks me up that he mentions control of conditions in the same paragraph defining the law. Recite, from the “We Believe” statements, that “we believe in control of conditions,” and most people simply throw up their hands and run the other way. In fact, if you are a member of a 12 step group, the advice you are getting might seem completely contradictory to the we believe statement. Except it isn’t. I explain all of that in my first book, A New Thought Journey through the 12 Steps. https://karenlinsley.com/store/

Believe me please when I say, as an almost 40 year member of 12 step groups, I absolutely do not have a problem with the we believe statements. In fact, I have used them to catapult my life into success, and you can too.  I’ve got some things to say about control of conditions, and I said them in my book, How to Live Fearlessly Feral. I won’t repeat them here because that will take me way off topic. https://karenlinsley.com/store/

My point here is, do you believe that the things Holmes presents to us are true?  Because belief is pretty important in our teaching.

Holmes said, “If you do not believe it works it will not work, because everything is belief.” Our beliefs are the foundation of how our lives manifest. If you don’t like what is happening in your life, change your belief. Unless of course you do not believe that our beliefs are the foundation of how our lives manifest.

Now. Let’s just say, for kicks and giggles, that you are unhappy with certain aspects of how your life is going. The place to address that is not by moving, changing doctors, changing partners, changing jobs, or doing any other outer change. The place to change is at the level of belief. The outer changes come later.

How do we go about changing a belief?  Well, the first step is to be aware that we have the belief in the first place. Let’s take a common example of a belief.  Money doesn’t grow on trees. If you have been told this your entire life, you likely believe it. And behind this belief are all sorts of limiting patterns of thinking that will keep you poor. Do you regularly experience not having enough money? Do you hoard your money? Do you vote with your wallet because money is the most important thing when considering who you want to lead us? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might want to consider that you have a limiting belief about money. Now, if you discover this and you decide you want to change this belief, then here is where that creative process I mentioned earlier comes into play.

Remember: thought, law, manifestation.

So we actively take those limiting thoughts and we change them by replacing them with new, not so limiting thoughts. But it goes deeper than just thoughts. Thought plus feeling equals power, so there must be feelings to accompany those thoughts.

So when you are changing those thoughts, I want you to act as if. Yep. I’m asking you to pretend. Pretend you have as much money as you want. Notice I didn’t say pretend you have a job that gets you that, or that you win the lottery or the megabucks. That’s outlining, and yet another topic for yet another podcast. Maybe I’ll do outlining next. Right now, just pretend you have as much money as you want. Sink into it. FEEL it!  There you go. Those feelings, coupled with the new thoughts?  PRESTO WHAMMO POWER! You are well on your way to abundance.

Keep doing that. Repeat as necessary. Changing a thought, especially a thought pattern, is like changing any other habit. Every time you think in terms of lack, limitation or not enoughness, change the thought. Replace it with thoughts of abundance. FEEL what it will feel like when there is abundance in your life. Repeat as necessary.

Now, a couple of caveats: DO NOT, under any circumstances, tell yourself you are a bad person for having the limiting thoughts in the first place. (See Love It all in my book, also https://open.substack.com/pub/fearlesslyferal/p/love-it-all-5c0?r=3ps1s&utm_medium=ios).

Secondly, search for and become grateful for the places in your life where abundance already occurs. I became grateful for the weeds on my property doing this.

That’s the process in a nutshell. Change your thinking, keep it changed, and change your life. It isn’t just a trite saying or a catchy advertising blurb. It really works.

I just want to present a few more quotes from Love and Law to you that might help you in this process.

“Tonight I want you to consider yourselves as the infinite or creative power…” ok guys, if you have listened to my podcast before, you know that I take statements like these literally. You know that because I believe that I am the infinite or creative power, I am empowered. You know that I don’t believe in a god that does things, in a god that is in charge. You know you will never hear me give credit to god for the good things in my life. I give credit to god for my life. Period. There’s a difference. Discover that difference for yourself. It’s huge. What I DO believe in is a god, an energy force, that is everywhere present. I do believe that force created me and you so it could experience the physical, and I do believe that we have all the same power as that force, because we are part of it and it is part of us.

“If you could see your thought and take a picture of it and of your conditions, you would see no difference between them.” Self awareness. Look at your thoughts. Now look at your life. Do the conditions in your life resemble the trend of your thinking?

“Recognizing that we are what we are because of that which we are gives us a basis upon which to work in order that we may become something of which we do not now appear to be.”  I just had to include this one. Once in a while Holmes comes out with something like this and his phrasing always cracks me up. Basically he means to begin where we are at and progress from there.

I could go on and on with these quotes, I’ve got a lot of highlighted sections in this book, but the one I want to elaborate on is this one: “…it is not to the sentimental ones who gush and gush, that big results come, it is to those who think deeply and simply and pertinently and persistently, and then, because they know.”

Specifically, “it is to those who think deeply and simply and pertinently and persistently.”

I am so grateful.  I am grateful that almost 40 years ago I was introduced to a new way of living that advocated for daily spiritual practice. And it advocated not just for meditation and treatment/prayer. OH M Y GOD! Spare me from people who do not think, or don’t believe, that personal self awareness is not a very important part of daily spiritual practice! I happen to think it is THE most important part.

Now, traditionally, in science of mind, we are taught that spiritual practice consists of meditation and affirmative prayer. Period.

I don’t know that I can properly express how inadequate I think that is. How limiting.

Any daily spiritual practice which leaves out the self awareness piece is incomplete.

Do the self awareness. Figure out what it is you are feeling and thinking. Change those thoughts when necessary. Use the power of treatment (https://www.buzzsprout.com/989560/episodes/17474399-the-treatment-series-1st-step-what-is-god) to do so. Then meditate on the new thoughts.

I guarantee it, your life will change for the better.
